In early 2008 Dame Carol Black, National Director for Health & Work, issued a whitepaper recommending referring patients to an early intervention work-related health service to tackle sickness absence. The review identified that sickness absence and worklessness costs the economy £100bn a year - more than the current annual budget for the NHS - with common mental health problems and musculoskeletal disorders being the major causes.

New right for employees to request time to train
From 6 April 2010 Employers in England, Scotland and Wales with 250 or more employees will have to seriously consider an eligible employee's formal request for time away from their core duties to undertake training.
